EcoFlow’s New 2nd Generation Power Kit

EcoFlow’s New 2nd Generation Power Kit

EcoFlow is making waves in the portable power industry with its new, upgraded Power Kit, which boasts several enhancements and additional features. In this article, we’ll dive into what’s new, the key upgrades, who this Power Kit is best suited for, and whether you should stick with the current version or wait for the new release.

Overview

The new EcoFlow Power Kit introduces substantial improvements across three main components: the Power Hub, Distribution Panel, and Display. Plus, there are two new additions, the Power Dock and Power Link, expanding the kit's functionality and usability. Given that Power Kits have only been on the market for three years, this quick evolution speaks to EcoFlow’s commitment to innovation, as they’ve taken feedback from vendors and customers to refine the product and address known issues like charge and discharge rates and noise levels.

Key Upgrades to the Power Kit Components

1. Power Hub

The Power Hub in the new Power Kit has been enhanced with a 5 kVA inverter and a 10 kVA surge capacity, translating to around 4,000–5,000 watts of power—about a 30% increase in capacity from the previous 3,600-watt model. The upgraded hub can now support multiple high-demand appliances, such as dual air conditioners or induction cooktops, at 120 volts.

Other enhancements include:

  • Three Battery Ports: The new hub supports three 48-volt battery ports, plus an extra 48-volt output for external devices, freeing up the main battery ports.
  • 120V or 240V Inverted Power: This dual voltage capacity will allow greater flexibility for various power needs, though specific wiring details are still forthcoming.
  • Increased DC Output: The new hub offers a maximum of 100 amps for DC appliances, up from 70 amps in the current version.
  • Higher Charging Rate: With an improved alternator charging capability of up to 4,000 watts, the new Power Hub meets the demand for faster recharging. However, compatibility with alternators and regulators is still being tested.
  • Quieter Operation: Sound levels have been reduced to around 48 decibels, which is more suitable for vehicle environments.

2. Distribution Panel

The updated Distribution Panel now supports 16 DC circuits (up from 12) and 12 AC circuits (up from 6). Key improvements include:

  • Remote Control via Display or Smartphone: All 16 DC circuits are controllable, allowing users to toggle power to devices without physical switches.
  • Increased Circuit Capacity: The DC circuit limit has been raised from 20 to approximately 30 amps, and AC breakers now support up to 250 amps.
  • Standardized AC Breakers: EcoFlow has switched to industry-standard AC breakers, making replacements easier. However, with these extra features, the new panel is larger, so smaller spaces may need the current version instead.

3. Display

The upgraded 10-inch touchscreen display offers a clearer, more user-friendly interface. It integrates with the Power Link (a new device discussed below) to display data from sensors and other connected devices.

New Additions to the Power Kit Lineup

EcoFlow is adding two new components to enhance the Power Kit’s utility:

1. Power Dock

This battery expansion module connects to the Power Hub, adding three extra battery ports per dock. Up to three Power Docks can be used, allowing for a total of nine battery units and up to 45 kWh of capacity.

2. Power Link

The Power Link functions as a data hub, allowing integration with temperature, water level, and gas sensors, as well as remote start capabilities for generators or vehicles. This feature aligns the Power Kit with high-end control systems in RVs and boats, giving users more control over their power management.

Compatibility and Real-World Application

The Power Dock and Power Link are compatible with both the current and upcoming Power Kits, which is great news for existing users looking to expand their setups. While these new features and upgrades are enticing, it's worth considering whether the new Power Kit is the right fit for you.

Who Should Consider the New Power Kit?

EcoFlow’s Power Kit caters to three main user groups:

  1. Basic Power Needs: If your primary power requirements are charging devices, lighting, and running small appliances, the Delta Pro from EcoFlow is likely your best option due to its portability and simplicity.
  2. Moderate Power Needs: Van conversions, recreational boats, and dedicated overland vehicles with consistent, moderate power needs are well-suited to the current generation Power Kit. It’s reliable, compact, and powerful enough for most mobile living setups, supporting a range of devices like fridges, induction cooktops, and internet routers.
  3. High-Demand and Commercial Applications: The new Power Kit was designed for those with high-power requirements, such as multiple air conditioners, large RVs, or commercial applications. The enhanced capabilities make it suitable for setups needing significant power output, expanded circuit options, and remote control functions.

Should You Upgrade?

While the second-generation Power Kit promises many benefits, it may not be necessary for all users. Here are some considerations to help you decide:

  • Budget: The new Power Kit will likely come at a higher price, reflecting its increased power capacity and added features.
  • Timeline: Pre-sales have begun, with the first units expected to ship by late 2024. If you need a Power Kit now, the current model will more than suffice for most standard applications.
  • Power Demands: Most van builds and similar setups don’t require the 5 kVA inverter or the 100 amps of DC output that the new model offers.
  • Reliability: Since the new Power Kits haven’t yet undergone extensive real-world testing, early adopters might encounter bugs or issues.

EcoFlow has made impressive strides with the second-generation Power Kit, particularly in expanding its use cases for high-demand users. However, the current model remains a robust, reliable solution for most mobile and off-grid power needs. Whether you’re building a van, upgrading an RV, or outfitting a remote cabin, EcoFlow offers a range of options to meet various power requirements.

FAQ

1. How is the 5kVA Power Kit(Gen 2) different from the 3.6kVA Power Kit(Gen1)?

The new 5kVA Power Kit consists of new components like the 5kVA Power Hub that includes new features like the 48V Output Port, 3x EcoFlow LFP Battery ports, and 240V Output when connected to shore power. The 5kVA Power Kit also allows the new 30/50amp Smart AC/DC Distribution Panel and Power Insight 10in. options to choose from. The 3.6kVA Power Kit(Gen1) was similar, but did not have 240V capabilities and did not offer a 48V Cable port. Please see the Specifications tab for more 5kVA component details.

2. Can I combine 2 kWh and 5 kWh batteries?

Yes, you can expand by combining 2 kWh batteries or 5 kWh batteries on the Power Hub or using the Power Dock. Keeping like-with-like batteries on the Power Docks is recommended for simpler battery state of charge readings and management.

2. What is the max output power allowed on an EcoFlow 5kVA Power Kit?

The Power Hub AC and DC output specifications as stated in the user manual:

  • 13.6VDC - 100A, 1300W Max
  • 26.4VDC - 60A, 1600W Max
  • AC Out (Discharge only): 120V - 4000W, 5000VA, 60Hz
  • AC Out (Bypass Mode):

Low Voltage: 100-120V ~ 50A Max, 50/60Hz

High Voltage: 220-240V ~ 50A Max, 50/60Hz

4. How much solar do I need to charge an EcoFlow 2 or 5 kWh Power Kit Battery?

The 5kVA Power Kit allows 13-60V 100A, 4000W max on Port 1 and 13-60V 30A, 1600W max on Ports 2/3. Depending on average consumption, mounting space, mounting location, the panel's rated power and whether the panels are wired in series or parallel, are all factors in making this decision. We cannot recommend any specific amount since all installations are different, so please decide accordingly based on your needs. We recommend connecting solar panels in series to increase the voltage, rather than parallel which increases the amperage. We offer multiple EcoFlow solar cables and accessories to help you plan your layout.
